Here the language of stone excels
all languages. The crowning glory of Orissa and one of the wonders of ancient India is the
stupendous Sun temple at Konark - lavish, monumental, all pervading, famous throughout the
world as the black pagoda. The dazzling temple is dedicated to Surya, the Sun god, riding
the heavens in his maginificent chariot, with twenty four richly decorated wheels and
seven life-like spirited horses ready to take off. Built in 13th centry A. D.. it displays
the power of expression of artists and engineers on stone. The eroticism depicted in
amorous sculptures, the life size images of dames playing musical instruments, the
gigantic status of war elephants and houses are the bewitching potentials still alive.
Sixty five km. from Bhubaneswar and thirty five km. from Puri it is all there waiting for
you. |
